Andrew Aitken Rooney (January 14, 1919 â November 4, 2011) was an American radio and television writer who was best known for his weekly broadcast “A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney”, a part of the CBS News program 60 Minutes from 1978 to 2011. His final regular appearance on 60 Minutes aired on October 2, 2011; he died a month later at the age of 92.
Rooney was drafted in the summer of 1941. After training at Fort Bragg, he shipped out to England the following summer as a member of a field artillery unit. He had no interest in those duties, however, and eventually landed a spot with the Armyâs newspaper, The Stars and Stripes, in London.
He flew combat missions with the Eighth Air Force, followed the troops ashore at Normandy, witnessed the breakout at St. Lô, crossed the bridge at Remagen, joined the triumphal march into Paris. He was the only war correspondent to win the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal for flying five combat missions.
