1681 Vitus Jonassen Bering (baptised 5 August 1681 â 19 December 1741) also known as Ivan Ivanovich Bering, was a Danish cartographer and explorer in Russian service, and an officer in the Russian Navy. He is known as a leader of two Russian expeditions, namely the First Kamchatka Expedition and the Great Northern Expedition, exploring the north-eastern coast of the Asian continent and from there the western coast on the North American continent. The Bering Strait, the Bering Sea, Bering Island, the Bering Glacier and the Bering Land Bridge were all named in his honor.
1827 Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca ( 5 August 1827 â 23 August 1892) was a Brazilian politician and military officer who served as the first president of Brazil. He was born in Alagoas in a military family, followed a military career, and became a national figure. Fonseca took office as provisional president after heading a military coup that deposed Emperor Pedro II and established the First Brazilian Republic in 1889, disestablishing the Empire. After his election in 1891, he stepped down the same year under great political pressure when he dissolved the National Congress. He died less than a year later.
1829 Milo Smith Hascall (August 5, 1829 â August 30, 1904) was an American soldier, banker, and real estate executive who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
1911 Robert Taylor (born Spangler Arlington Brugh; August 5, 1911 â June 8, 1969) was an American film and television actor and singer who was one of the most popular leading men of his time. Robert Taylor was sworn into the United States Navy on February 9, 1943 and commissioned as a Lt. (j.g.). He went to the Naval Air Station in New Orleans for three months of instructor training. On January 11, 1944 he earned his wings, finishing 5th in his class. Lt. Taylor became a flight instructor.
1930 Neil Alden Armstrong (August 5, 1930 â August 25, 2012) was an American astronaut and aeronautical engineer, and the first person to walk on the Moon. He was also a naval aviator, test pilot, and university professor.
1935 Master Sergeant Raul Perez “Roy” Benavidez (August 5, 1935 â November 29, 1998) was a United States Army master sergeant who received the Medal of Honor for his valorous actions in combat near Lá»c Ninh, South Vietnam on May 2, 1968, while serving as a member of the Army Special Forces during the Vietnam War.
