1798 John Adams Dix (July 24, 1798 â April 21, 1879) was Secretary of the Treasury, Governor of New York and Union major general during the Civil War. He was notable for arresting the pro-Southern Maryland General Assembly, preventing that divided border state from seceding, and for arranging a system for prisoner exchange via the DixâHill Cartel, concluded in partnership with Confederate Major General Daniel Harvey Hill.
1827 Julius Adolph De Lagnel CSA (July 24, 1827 â June 3, 1912), was a Confederate States Army officer, who was appointed and confirmed as a brigadier general, during the American Civil War, but who declined the appointment. He was second in command to Brigadier General Josiah Gorgas[2] in the Confederate Ordnance Bureau and at times was an inspector of arsenals. Before the war, he served in the United States Army from March 8, 1847 until May 17, 1861. After the war, he was engaged in Pacific steamship service. 1828 Cuvier Grover (July 24, 1828 â June 6, 1885) was a career officer in the United States Army and a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
1840 Ranald Slidell Mackenzie, also called Bad Hand, (July 27, 1840 â January 19, 1889) was a career United States Army officer and general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was described by General Ulysses S. Grant as its most promising young officer. He also served with great distinction in the following Indian Wars.
1904 Nikolay Gerasimovich Kuznetsov (24 July 1904 â 6 December 1974) was a Soviet naval officer who achieved the rank of Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union and served as People’s Commissar of the Navy during the Second World War. The N. G. Kuznetsov Naval Academy and the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov are named in his honor.
1962 Herbert Raymond McMaster (born July 24, 1962) is a retired United States Army lieutenant general who served as the 26th United States National Security Advisor from 2017 to 2018. He is also known for his roles in the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
