1724 Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne (22 May 1724 â 12 June 1772), with the surname sometimes spelt Dufresne, was a Breton-born French explorer who made important discoveries in the south Indian Ocean, in Tasmania and in New Zealand. Du Fresne was killed by MÄori in 1772. He is commemorated in various place names, as well as in the name of the research vessel providing logistical support to the French Southern Territories of Ãle Amsterdam, Ãle Saint-Paul, Ãles Crozet, and Ãles Kerguelen, the Marion Dufresne II.
1820 Alfred Sully (May 22, 1820 â April 27, 1879), was a military officer during the American Civil War and during the Indian Wars on the frontier. He was also a noted painter.
1885 Soemu Toyoda (è±ç° 坿¦, Toyoda Soemu, 22 May 1885 â 22 September 1957) was an admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy in World War II.
1907 Laurence Kerr Olivier, Baron Olivier, OM (/ËlÉrÉns ËkÉËr ÉËlɪvieɪ/; 22 May 1907 â 11 July 1989) When World War II broke out, Olivier intended to join the Royal Air Force, but was still contractually obliged to other parties. He apparently disliked actors such as Charles Laughton and Cedric Hardwicke, who would hold charity cricket matches to help the war effort. Olivier took flying lessons, and racked up over 200 hours. After two years of service, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Olivier RNVR, as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, but was never called to see action. In 1944 he and fellow actor Ralph Richardson.
1909 Chu VÄn Tấn (22 May 1909 â 1984 in Võ Nhai) was a Vietnamese general. He was a member of the 1st Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Minister of Defense in the 1945 provisional cabinet of the DRV.[1] Lieutenant General Chu Van Tan (1909â1984)was a general of the Vietnam People’s Army. He was former Minister of Defense in the Provisional Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam,one of the first 9 Major Generals of the Vietnam People’s Army to be made in 1948 and also one of the first two lieutenant generals.
1938 Dieter Dengler (May 22, 1938 â February 7, 2001) was a German-born United States Navy aviator who was the first captured U.S. pilot who escaped enemy captivity during the Vietnam war. He had escaped from the Pathet Lao prison camp in Laos after six months of torture and was rescued by American forces after surviving in the jungle for 23 days. His childhood hardship, as well as his training in escaping and survival at the navy SERE survival school, during which he had successfully escaped twice and was the only student to gain weight, helped him survive as a prisoner and make escape plans despite intolerable torture. He was also inspired by his maternal grandfather, Hermann Schnuerle, who was subjected to public humiliation and was sentenced to work in the rock mine for a year for refusing to vote for Adolf Hitler. After his recovery, he resumed service in the navy and later served as a private aircraft test pilot and a commercial airline pilot. He has been the subject of many documentaries, books and films, including the Christian Bale starrer, ‘Rescue Dawn’.
