1598 Maarten Tromp, (born April 23, 1598, Breille, Hollandâdied Aug. 9, 1653, at sea off Terheijde, near Scheveningen), Dutch admiral, the highest ranking sea commander (from 1636) under the stadholder during the Dutch wars with Spain and England during the first half of the 17th century. His victory over the Spanish in the Battle of the Downs (1639) signalled the passing of Spainâs power at sea.
1621 Sir William Penn, (born April 23, 1621, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Eng.âdied Sept. 16, 1670, London), British admiral and father of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. In his youth Penn served at sea, and in the English Civil Wars he fought for Parliament, being appointed rear admiral of the Irish seas in 1647.
1861 Field Marshal Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby, 1st Viscount Allenby, GCB, GCMG, GCVO (23 April 1861 â 14 May 1936) was an English soldier and British Imperial Governor. He fought in the Second Boer War and also in the First World War, in which he led the British Empire’s Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign against the Ottoman Empire in the conquest of Palestine.
1898 General Lucius Dubignon Clay (April 23, 1898 â April 16, 1978) was a senior officer of the United States Army who was known for his administration of occupied Germany after World War II.[1] He served as the deputy to General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1945; deputy military governor, Germany, in 1946; Commander in Chief, United States Forces in Europe and military governor of the United States Zone, Germany, from 1947 to 1949. Clay orchestrated the Berlin Airlift (1948â1949) when the USSR blockaded West Berlin.
1903 Lieutenant-General Guy Granville Simonds, CC, CB, CBE, DSO, CD (April 23, 1903 â May 15, 1974) was a senior Canadian Army officer who served with distinction during World War II, where he commanded the 1st Canadian Infantry Division and II Canadian Corps. In 1951, at the age of just 48, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff, the most senior member of the Canadian Army, a post he held for four years.
1923 Aaron Spelling (April 22, 1923 â June 23, 2006) was an American film and television producer and occasional actor. He served in the United States Army Air Corps as a pilot during World War II.
