1800 Sir James Clark Ross FRS FLS FRAS (15 April 1800 â 3 April 1862) was a British Royal Navy officer and polar explorer known for his explorations of the Arctic, participating in two expeditions led by his uncle Sir John Ross, and four led by Sir William Parry, and, in particular, for his own Antarctic expedition from 1839 to 1843.
1820 Evander McNair was a prosperous antebellum merchant in Mississippi and Arkansas, a Mexican War veteran, and a Confederate general who ranks among Arkansasâs most successful and respected Civil War commanders.During the Mexican War, he served as ordnance sergeant in Company E of the First Mississippi Rifles, a regiment commanded by Colonel Jefferson Davis. McNair became colonel of the 4th Arkansas Infantry Regiment on August 17, 1861.On November 4, 1862, McNair received his commission as Brigadier General.
1822 Napoleon Jackson Tecumseh Dana (April 15, 1822 â July 15, 1905) was a career U.S. Army officer who fought with distinction during the MexicanâAmerican War and served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was wounded several times during his military career, often severely, and later in life was involved with railroads and veteran soldier affairs in the U.S.
1837 Horace Porter (April 15, 1837 â May 29, 1921) was an American soldier and diplomat who served as a lieutenant colonel, ordnance officer and staff officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, personal secretary to General and President Ulysses S. Grant. He also was secretary to General William T. Sherman, vice president of the Pullman Palace Car Company and U.S. Ambassador to France from 1897 to 1905.
1885 Tadeusz Kutrzeba (15 April 1885 â 8 January 1947) was a general of the army during the Second Polish Republic. He served as a major general in the Polish Army in overall command of Army PoznaÅ during the 1939 German Invasion of Poland.
1919 Wing Comdr. Clive Beadon, a World War II bomber pilot awarded one of Britain’s top military honors for his bravery against Japanese forces. He was commissioned months before the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 and was transferred in 1942 to Southeast Asia, where he flew Liberator and Wellington bombers in hundreds of missions against Japanese targets.
