1584 Ferdinando Fairfax, 2nd Lord Fairfax of Cameron MP (29 March 1584 â 14 March 1648) was an English nobleman and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1614 and 1648. He was a commander in the Parliamentary army in the English Civil War.
1769 Nicolas-Jean de Dieu Soult, duke de Dalmatie, (born March 29, 1769, Saint-Amans-la-Bastide, later Saint-Amans-Soult, Fr.âdied Nov. 26, 1851, Saint-Amans-Soult), French military leader and political figure who was noted for his courage in battle and his opportunism in politics. Upon the death of his father in 1785, Soult enlisted in the infantry. At the outbreak of the French Revolution (1789â92), he was a sergeant at Strasbourg.
1790 John Tyler (10th President of the United States) organized a militia company when the British captured Hampton, Virginia. He was able to defend Richmond and promoted as a captain. Since the action died off, the company dissolved two months later. He received land properties in Iowa for his military service.
1895 Ernst Jünger (29 March 1895 â 17 February 1998) was a highly decorated Imperial German soldier, author, and entomologist who became publicly known for his World War I memoir Storm of Steel. The son of a successful businessman and chemist, Jünger rebelled against an affluent upbringing and sought adventure in the Wandervogel, before running away to briefly serve in the French Foreign Legion, an illegal act. Because he escaped prosecution in Germany due to his father’s efforts, Jünger was able to enlist in the German Army on the outbreak of World War I in 1914. During an ill-fated offensive in 1918 Jünger’s suffered the last and most serious of his many woundings, and he was awarded the Pour le Mérite, a rare decoration for one of his rank.
1898 Cecil Arthur Lewis MC (29 March 1898 â 27 January 1997) was a British fighter ace who flew with the famed No. 56 Squadron RAF in the First World War, and was credited with destroying eight enemy aircraft. He went on to be a founding executive of the British Broadcasting Company and to enjoy a long career as a writer, notably of the aviation classic Sagittarius Rising, some scenes from which were represented in the film Aces High
1932 William Richard Charette (March 29, 1932 â March 18, 2012) was a United States Navy master chief hospital corpsman who received the nation’s highest military decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor. He was awarded the medal for heroic actions “above and beyond the call of duty” on March 27, 1953, while assigned to a Marine Corps rifle company during the Korean War. He retired from the Navy after 26 years of service.
