1770 Maximilian, Freiherr von Wimpffen was a military commander who served in the Austrian army during the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars. Although a competent field commander, he was above all noted for his excellent knowledge of military strategy and tactics, which made him a key member in the General Staff of the Imperial and Royal Army during the Napoleonic Wars.
1880 Ãlvaro Obregón Salido was a general in the Mexican Revolution, who became the 46th President of Mexico from 1920 to 1924. He supported Sonora’s decision to follow Governor of Coahuila Venustiano Carranza as leader of a revolution against the Victoriano Huerta regime. Carranza appointed Obregón commander of the revolutionary forces in northwestern Mexico and in 1915 appointed him as his minister of war. In 1920, Obregón launched a revolt against Carranza, in which Carranza was assassinated. Obregón won the subsequent election with overwhelming support.
1888 Admiral Sir Tom Spencer Vaughan Phillips, KCB was a Royal Navy officer who served during the First and Second World Wars. He was nicknamed “Tom Thumb”, due to his short stature. He is best known for his command of Force Z during the Japanese invasion of Malaya, where he went down with his flagship, the battleship HMS Prince of Wales. Phillips was one of the highest ranking Allied officers killed in battle during the Second World War.
1901 Florence Beatrice Green (19 February 1901 â 4 February 2012) was an English woman who was the last known surviving veteran of the First World War from any country. She was a member of the Women’s Royal Air Force. Florence Green was born at Edmonton, London. She joined the Royal Air Force; the Women’s Royal Air Force, on 13 September 1918 at the age of 17, where she served as an officers’ mess steward, service number 22360. She worked in the officers’ mess at RAF Marham and was also based at Narborough airfield.
1924 Lee Marvin. Private First Class, United States Marine Corps. Movie Actor. Lee Marvin was born on February 19, 1924, he served with the Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific and was awarded a Purple Heart for a wound that he received there. On his return, he became a movie actor and starred in a number of motion pictures until his death in Arizona on August 29, 1987.
1960 Prince Andrew, Duke of York, KG, GCVO, CD, ADC (Andrew Albert Christian Edward, born 19 February 1960) is the third child and second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He is eighth in the line of succession to the British throne.
