Field Marshal Jeffery Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst, KB (29 January 1717 â 3 August 1797) was an officer and Commander-in-Chief of the Forces in the British Army. Amherst is best known as the architect of Britain’s successful campaign to conquer the territory of New France during the Seven Years’ War. Under his command, British forces captured the cities of Louisbourg, Quebec City and Montreal, as well as several major fortresses. He was also the first British Governor General in the territories that eventually became Canada.

Franklin Kitchell Gardner (January 29, 1823 â April 29, 1873) was a Confederate major general in the American Civil War, noted for his service at the Siege of Port Hudson on the Mississippi River. Gardner built extensive fortifications at this important garrison, 16,000 strong at its peak. At the mercy of conflicting orders, he found himself besieged and greatly outnumbered. His achievement at holding out for 47 days and inflicting severe losses on the enemy before surrendering has been praised by military historians.
William McKinley (January 29, 1843 â September 14, 1901) was the 25th president of the United States from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. McKinley had begun his Civil War service by enlisting as a private in the 23rd regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After he bravely brought food to troops under fire at 1862’s Battle of Antietam, he was promoted to second lieutenant. By warâs end, he had become a brevet major in the volunteers. For the rest of his life, many called him simply “The Major.”
Victor Mature Mature was born in Louisville, Kentucky on 29 January 1913. He attended Kentucky Military Institute. In July 1942, Mature attempted to enlist in the U.S. Navy, but was rejected for color blindness. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard after taking a different eye test the same day. He was assigned to the USCGC Storis, which was part of the Greenland Patrol.
Tom Selleck was born on 29 January 1945 in Detroit, Mi. He received a draft notice during the Vietnam War and joined the California National Guard. He served from 1967 to 1973 in the 160th Infantry Regiment of the California National Army Guard, before resuming his acting career.
