Mark Antony (Marcus Antonius) Born January 14, 83 B.C. d. 30 B.C. Roman general, politician. Antony married Cleopatra, although he was married to Octavian’s sister when they met. Cleopatra bore him three children. After Antony was defeated by Octavian’s forces at the Battle of Actium, he and Cleopatra fled to Egypt, where they separately committed suicide.
Benedict Arnold Born January 14, 1741 d. 1801 American general, traitor. He attempted to betray West Point to the British during the American Revolution. Before this, he was considered an American hero of the Revolution: Arnold helped capture the British garrison of Fort Ticonderoga, hindered a British invasion of New York at the Battle of Lake Champlain, and played a crucial role in the surrender of British General John Burgoyne’s army at Saratoga. However, he began spying for the British and plotted to surrender West Point. When his plot was exposed, he began fighting for the British.
Christian Julius de Meza (14 January 1792 â 16 September 1865) was the commander of the Danish Army during the 1864 Second Schleswig War. de Meza was responsible for the withdrawal of the Danish army from the Danevirke, an event which shocked the Danish public and resulted in the loss of his command.
Frederick Steele (January 14, 1819 â January 12, 1868) was a career military officer in the United States Army, serving as a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was most noted for retaking much of secessionist Arkansas for the Union cause, escaping the besieged port-city of Camden through successful deception tactics, and defeating Sterling Price and E. Kirby Smith at Jenkins Ferry.
Hugh Judson Kilpatrick (January 14, 1836 â December 4, 1881) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, achieving the rank of brevet major general. He was later the United States Minister to Chile and an unsuccessful candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives.
Fritz Hermann Michael Bayerlein (14 January 1899 â 30 January 1970) was a general in the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany during World War II. He initially served as a staff officer, including with Erwin Rommel in the Afrika Korps. He then commanded the 3rd Panzer Division, the Panzer Lehr Division and LIII Army Corps in the European theatre. Bayerlein was a recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.
