Joan of Arc , nicknamed “The Maid of Orléans” (French: La Pucelle d’Orléans), is considered a heroine of France for her role during the Lancastrian phase of the Hundred Years’ War, and was canonized as a Catholic saint.
John Smith (baptized. 6 January 1580 â 21 June 1631) was an English soldier, explorer, colonial governor, Admiral of New England, and author. He played an important role in the establishment of the colony at Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in America in the early 17th century.
Ferdinand Baptista von Schill (6 January 1776 â 31 May 1809) was a Prussian major who revolted unsuccessfully against French domination of Prussia in May 1809. Schill’s rebellion ended at the Battle of Stralsund, a battle which also saw Schill’s own death in action. Outnumbered 3 to 1, Schill’s Prussian forces succumbed to a Napoleonic force supported by Dutch and Danish auxiliaries.
John Calvin Brown (January 6, 1827 â August 17, 1889) was an American politician, soldier and businessman. He served as Governor of Tennessee from 1871 to 1875, and was president of the state’s 1870 constitutional convention, which wrote the current Tennessee State Constitution. Although he originally opposed secession, Brown fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War, eventually rising to the rank of major-general.
John Wesley Frazer (January 6, 1827 â March 16, 1906) was an American soldier, planter, and businessman. He was a career officer in the United States Army, and then served as a Confederate general during the American Civil War. Frazer’s most notable action during the Civil War was when he surrendered the Cumberland Gap and was captured in the autumn of 1863. He was held as a prisoner of war until after hostilities ended in the spring of 1865, and then took up work in farming and business.
Carl Sandburg volunteered to go to the military and was stationed in Puerto Rico with the 6th Illinois Infantry during the SpanishâAmerican War, disembarking at Guánica, Puerto Rico on July 25, 1898. Sandburg was never actually called to battle. He attended West Point for just two weeks, before failing a mathematics and grammar exam.
