With Susan B. Anthony in the news, here is a story of her namesake. The USS Susan B. Anthony (AP-72) was a War Service Act Army transportation ship in during World War 2. She was built in 1930 as the SS Santa Clara and operated by the Grace Steamship Company. She was chartered by the US Navy in August of 1942 and renamed the USS Susan B. Anthony. She served in the invasions of North Africa and Sicily. In 1943 & 1944 she crossed and recrossed the Atlantic moving soldiers and cargo. Early in the morning of 7 June 1944, while transporting soldiers of the 90th Infantry Division to Utah Beach she struck a mine. Efforts to save the Susan B. were not successful and she sank. All 2689 men aboard were saved, which the Guinness Book of World Records lists as the largest rescue of people without loss of life.
