George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River occurred on the night of December 25â26, 1776, during the Revolutionary War. It was the first move in a surprise attack organized by Washington against the Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey on the morning of December 26. The Hessian forces were defeated in a much needed victory for the cause of the United States.
