THIS MONTH IN AMERICAN MILITARY HISTORY
George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River occurred on the night of December 25–26, 1776, during the Revolutionary War. It was the first move in a surprise attack organized by Washington against the Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey on the morning of December 26. The Hessian forces were defeated in a much needed victory for the cause of the United States.
