ÙØ¯ اÙÙâ, 2 August 1696 â 13 December 1754), known as Mahmud the Hunchback, was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1730 to 1754. He took over the throne after the Patrona Halil rebellion and he kept good relations with Mughal and Safavid Empires.
1740 Jean Baptiste Camille de Canclaux (2 August 1740, in Paris â 27 December 1817, in Paris) was a French army commander during the French Revolution and a Peer of France. He joined a cavalry regiment the French Royal Army in 1756 and fought at Minden in the Seven Years’ War. He attained the rank of maréchal de camp (brigadier general) in 1788 and lieutenant general in 1792. He commanded the Army of the Coasts of Brest from May until October 1793 fighting several actions during the War in the Vendée. Replaced for political reasons, he led the Army of the West in 1794â1795. He held interior posts during the rest of the French Revolutionary Wars and under the First French Empire of Napoleon.
1826 William Denison Whipple (August 2, 1826-April 1, 1902), he was appointed to West Point in 1847, graduating in 1851, ranking near the bottom of his class, a low standing belied by future assignments and achievements. He performed routine duty on the Frontier in New Mexico and Texas and in 1861 was on Quartermaster duty at Indianola, Texas, when that post was captured by Texan insurgents. He escaped through the enemy’s lines and made his way East in time to participate in the Battle of First Manassas as Assistant Adjutant General in Hunter’s Division. He served as a staff officer during and after the Civil War and was successively promoted to Captain, Major, Brigadier General of Volunteers (July 17, 1863) and Colonel. He also won the brevet of Major General, United States Army, for “gallant and meritorious services in the field during the rebellion.”
1828 Manuel Pavia y Rodriguez de Alburquerque (August 2, 1828 â January 4, 1895) was a Spanish general, born in Cadiz, who was an important part of Spanish political life during the second half of the 19th century. He participated in the Revolution of 1868, which removed Isabella II from power, and led the coup d’état which brought down the First Spanish Republic, giving way to the Restoration and the rule of Isabella’s son Alfonso XII.
1866 Baron Adrien Victor Joseph de Gerlache de Gomery FRSGS (2 August 1866 â 4 December 1934) was an officer in the Belgian Royal Navy who led the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897â99.
1868 Constantine I (2 August 1868 â 11 January 1923) was King of Greece from 18 March 1913 to 11 June 1917 and from 19 December 1920 to 27 September 1922. He was commander-in-chief of the Hellenic Army during the unsuccessful Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and led the Greek forces during the successful Balkan Wars of 1912â1913, in which Greece expanded to include Thessaloniki, doubling in area and population. He succeeded to the throne of Greece on 18 March 1913, following his father’s assassination.
