1770 Sir Edward Codrington, GCB, FRS (Apr 27, 1770 – Apr 28, 1851) was a British admiral, who took part in the Battle of Trafalgar and the Battle of Navarino.
1822 Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822 â July 23, 1885) was an American military leader who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. As president, Grant was an effective civil rights executive who created the Justice Department and worked with the Radical Republicans during Reconstruction to protect African Americans. As Commanding General, he led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War in 1865 and thereafter briefly served as Secretary of War.
1835 John Murray Corse (April 27, 1835 â April 27, 1893) was an American politician and soldier who served as a general in the Union Army in the American Civil War. He was a staff officer during the liberation of the Upper Mississippi, and then served in the front line at Corinth and Vicksburg, being promoted to brigadier general. He is chiefly remembered for his stubborn defence of the Allatoona Pass (October 1864) against superior numbers, despite being seriously wounded, while Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman signalled a message which was turned into a popular ballad Hold the fort, for I am coming.
1850 Hans Hartwig von Beseler (1850-1921) was born in Greifswald, Germany, to a well-known family of the educated middle class. Inspired by the northern German Protestant nationalism that swept through Prussia during his youth, he yearned for a military career and joined the army as a military engineer in 1868. Serving in a variety of command and staff positions over the next several decades, Beseler, who was ennobled in 1904, was considered as a possible successor to Alfred von Schlieffen (1833-1913) as chief of the general staff. He was ultimately not chosen and was forced to retire in 1910. Two years later, he took up a seat in the Prussian house of lords. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914 Beseler was brought out of retirement and was given command of the 3rd Reserve Corps in the German First Army led by Generaloberst Alexander von Kluck.
1893 Dragoljub “Draža” MihailoviÄ (Apr 27, 1893 – Jul 17, 1946) was a Yugoslav Serb general during World War II. He was the leader of the Chetnik Detachments of the Yugoslav Army, a royalist and nationalist movement and guerrilla force established following the German invasion of Yugoslavia in 1941.MihailoviÄ went into hiding after the war but was captured in March 1946. He was tried and convicted of high treason and war crimes by the communist authorities of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, and executed by firing squad in Belgrade in July. The nature and extent of his responsibility for collaboration and ethnic massacres remains controversial. In May 2015, MihailoviÄ’s verdict was overturned on appeal by the Supreme Court of Cassation of Serbia, citing his trial and conviction as politically and ideologically motivated.
