27 AUGUST 1942 – USS Iowa BB-61 is launched. She was 887 ft 3 in length and a beam of 108 ft 2 in and carried a main armament of 9 16in guns. Speed was 33mph and had a crew of 151 officers and 2637 enlisted. In WW2 the Iowa served in the Pacific and participated in numerous engagements. During the Korean war the Iowa ranged up and down the coast bombarding targets with shells weighing as much as 2,700 lbs. She was decommissioned in 1958 and then recommissioned in 1984, being outfitted with Harpoon and Tomahawk missiles.
