8 June 1942 Damaged by Japanese dive bombers during the previous day’s battles, the USS Yorktown had lost all power and was listing heavily. Navy Capt. Elliott Buckmaster had ordered the Yorktown abandoned. Despite the leaks and the list, the ship continued to float and a salvage crew was sent back to see what could be recovered. It was during that salvage trip that the Japanese submarine I-168 fired a spread of torpedoes that finally doomed the stalwart Yorktown as well as the destroyer USS Hammann.
