1792 Count Frédéric de Merode (June 9, 1792â November 4, 1830) was a volunteer of the Belgian Revolution, brother of Félix de Merode, member of the Provisional Government.
1833 John Rogers Cooke CSA (June 9, 1833 â April 10, 1891) was a Confederate general during the American Civil War. He was the son of Union general Philip St. George Cooke and the brother-in-law of Confederate cavalry leader Jeb Stuart.
1881 Felix Nikolaus Alexander Georg Graf von Luckner (9 June 1881, Dresden â 13 April 1966, Malmö), sometimes called Count Luckner in English, was a German nobleman, naval officer, author, and sailor who earned the epithet Der Seeteufel (the Sea Devil), and his crew that of Die Piraten des Kaisers (the Emperor’s Pirates), for his exploits in command of the sailing commerce raider SMS Seeadler (Sea Eagle) between 1916 and 1917.
1916 Robert Strange McNamara (June 9, 1916 â July 6, 2009) was an American business executive and the eighth United States Secretary of Defense, serving from 1961 to 1968 under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He played a major role in escalating the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War. McNamara was responsible for the institution of systems analysis in public policy, which developed into the discipline known today as policy analysis.
1922 John Gillespie Magee Jr. (9 June 1922 â 11 December 1941) was a World War II Anglo-American Royal Canadian Air Force fighter pilot and poet, who wrote the poem “High Flight”. He was killed in an accidental mid-air collision over England in 1941.
