1806 Gideon Johnson Pillow (June 8, 1806 â October 8, 1878) was an American lawyer, politician, speculator, slaveowner, United States Army major general of volunteers during the MexicanâAmerican War and Confederate brigadier general in the American Civil War.
1813 David Dixon Porter (June 8, 1813 â February 13, 1891) was a United States Navy admiral and a member of one of the most distinguished families in the history of the U.S. Navy. Promoted as the second U.S. Navy officer ever to attain the rank of admiral, after his adoptive brother David G. Farragut, Porter helped improve the Navy as the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy after significant service in the American Civil War.
1821 John Dunlap Stevenson (June 8, 1821 â January 22, 1897) was an American attorney, politician, and soldier in the U.S. Army in two wars. He was a brigadier general of volunteers during the American Civil War. In 1866 he was nominated and confirmed for appointment as brevet major general of volunteers.
1920 Ivan Nikitovich Kozhedub ( 8 June 1920 â 8 August 1991) was a Soviet World War II fighter ace. Credited with over 60 solo victories by most historians, he is considered to be the highest scoring Soviet and Allied fighter pilot of World War II. He is one of the few pilots to have shot down a Messerschmitt Me 262 jet. He was made a Hero of the Soviet Union on three occasions (4 February 1944, 19 August 1944, and 18 August 1945). After the war he remained in the military and commanded the 324th Fighter Air Division during Soviet operations in the Korean War.
1937 Bruce McCandless II (June 8, 1937 â December 21, 2017) was a United States Navy officer and aviator, electrical engineer, and NASA astronaut. In 1984, during the first of his two Space Shuttle missions, he completed the first untethered spacewalk by using the Manned Maneuvering Unit.
