1825 IstvánTürr, (10 August 1825 in Baja, Hungary â 3 May 1908 in Budapest) was a Hungarian soldier, revolutionary, canal architect and engineer, remembered in Italy for his role in that country’s unification and his association with Garibaldi. In the later years of his life became known as a peace activist.
1832 Thomas Ogden Osborn (August 11, 1832 â March 27, 1904) was an American lawyer, soldier, and diplomat who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was also the U.S. Minister to Argentina from 1874 to 1885.
1882 Rodolfo Graziani, 1st Marquis of Neghelli (11 August 1882 â 11 January 1955), was a prominent Italian military officer in the Kingdom of Italy’s Regio Esercito (“Royal Army”), primarily noted for his campaigns in Africa before and during World War II. A dedicated fascist, he was a key figure in the Italian military during the reign of Victor Emmanuel III.
1892 WÅadysÅaw Albert Anders (11 August 1892 â 12 May 1970) was a general in the Polish Army and later in life a politician and prominent member of the Polish government-in-exile in London.
1902 Christian Marie Ferdinand de la Croix de Castries (11 August 1902 â 29 July 1991) was the French commander at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
1933 Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Julian Robertson Oswald GCB (11 August 1933 â 19 July 2011) was a senior Royal Navy officer. After training as a gunnery specialist, Oswald commanded a frigate and then a destroyer before achieving higher command in the navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff in the early 1990s. In that capacity he advised the British Government on the reduction in the size of the fleet under the Options for Change restructuring programme and on the deployment of Naval Support for the Gulf War in 1991: he also made the decision that members of the Women’s Royal Naval Service should be allowed to serve in Royal Navy ships.
