1742 Nathanael Greene (August 7, 1742 â June 19, 1786, sometimes misspelled Nathaniel) was a major general of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. He emerged from the war with a reputation as General George Washington’s most talented and dependable officer, and is known for his successful command in the southern theater of the war.
1779 Lieutenant-Colonel John By (7 August 1779 â 1 February 1836) was an English military engineer, best remembered for supervising the construction of the Rideau Canal and founding Bytown in the process. It developed and was designated as the Canadian capital, Ottawa.
1829 Thomas Ewing Jr. (August 7, 1829 â January 21, 1896) was an attorney, the first chief justice of Kansas and leading free state advocate, Union Army general during the American Civil War, and two-term United States Congressman from Ohio, 1877â1881. He narrowly lost the 1880 campaign for Ohio Governor.

1876 Margaretha Geertruida MacLeod (née Zelle; 7 August 1876 â 15 October 1917), better known by the stage name Mata Hari, was a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan who was convicted of being a spy for Germany during World War I. Despite her having admitted under interrogation to taking money to work as a German spy, many people still believe she was innocent because the French Army needed a scapegoat. She was executed by firing squad in France.
1881 Jean Louis Xavier François Darlan (7 August 1881 â 24 December 1942) was a French admiral and political figure. Born in Nérac, Darlan graduated from the Ãcole navale in 1902 and quickly advanced through the ranks following his service during World War I. He was promoted to rear admiral in 1929, vice admiral in 1932, lieutenant admiral in 1937 before finally being made admiral and Chief of the Naval Staff in 1937. In 1939, Darlan was promoted to admiral of the fleet, a rank created specifically for him.
