In Tokyo, an international war crimes tribunal sentences seven Japanese military and government officials, including wartime leader of Japan, General Hideki Tojo, to death for their roles in World War II. He was hanged as a war criminal on 23 December 1948. At his trial, he asserted his personal responsibility for the war and attempted to deflect attention from the emperor.
