1769 Sir Hudson Lowe GCMG KCB (28 July 1769 â 10 January 1844) was an Anglo-Irish soldier and colonial administrator who is best known for his time as Governor of St Helena, where he was the “gaoler” of the Emperor Napoléon.
1778 Charles Stewart (28 July 1778 â 6 November 1869) was an officer in the United States Navy who commanded a number of US Navy ships, including USS Constitution. He saw service during the Quasi War and both Barbary Wars in the Mediterranean along North Africa and the War of 1812. He later commanded the navy yard in Philadelphia and was promoted to become the Navy’s first flag officer shortly before retiring. He was promoted to rear admiral after he retired from the Navy. He lived a long life and was the last surviving Navy captain who had served in the War of 1812.
1810 Ormsby MacKnight (or McKnight) Mitchel (August 28, 1810, â October 31, 1862) was an American astronomer and major general in the American Civil War. A multi-talented man, he was also an attorney, surveyor, professor, and publisher. He is notable for publishing the first magazine in the United States devoted to astronomy. Known in the Union Army as “Old Stars”, he is best known for ordering the raid that became famous as the Great Locomotive Chase during the American Civil War.
1907 James Henry Lane (July 28, 1833 â September 21, 1907) was a university professor and Confederate general in the American Civil War. As its first Commandant, he is considered to be the father of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and is the namesake of the University’s oldest building, Lane Hall
1911 Clive Robertson Caldwell, DSO, DFC & Bar (28 July 1911 â 5 August 1994) was the leading Australian air ace of World War II. He is officially credited with shooting down 28.5 enemy aircraft in over 300 operational sorties, including an ace in a day. In addition to his official score, he has been ascribed six probables and 15 damaged. Caldwell flew Curtiss P-40 Tomahawks and Kittyhawks in the North African Campaign and Supermarine Spitfires in the South West Pacific Theatre. He was the highest-scoring P-40 pilot from any air force and the highest-scoring Allied pilot in North Africa. Caldwell also commanded a Royal Air Force (RAF) squadron and two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) wings. His military service ended in controversy, when he resigned in protest at the misuse of Australian First Tactical Air Force’s fighter units and was later court martialed and convicted for trading liquor.
1923 Kent Liston Lee (July 28, 1923 â August 11, 2017) was a Vice Admiral of the United States Navy. The 36-year veteran of the Navy saw combat in World War II and the Korean War, and commanded the aircraft carrier Enterprise (CVN-65) during the Vietnam War. He is best known for his work in driving the development and procurement of the F/A-18 Hornet.
