1766 Baron Dominique Jean Larrey (8 July 1766 â 25 July 1842) was a French surgeon and military doctor, who distinguished himself in the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. An important innovator in battlefield medicine and triage, he is often considered the first modern military surgeon.
1819 Alexander Hays (July 8, 1819 â May 5, 1864) was a Union Army general in the American Civil War, killed in the Battle of the Wilderness.
1819 Sir Francis Leopold McClintock KCB FRS (8 July 1819 â 17 November 1907) was an Irish explorer in the British Royal Navy, known for his discoveries in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. He confirmed explorer John Rae’s controversial report gathered from Inuit sources on the fate of Franklin’s lost expedition, the ill-fated Royal Navy undertaking commanded by Sir John Franklin in 1845 attempting to be the first to traverse the Northwest Passage.
1824 WÅodzimierz Bonawentura Krzyżanowski (8 July 1824 â 31 January 1887) was a Polish American engineer, politician, and brigadier general in the Union Army. In the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, Krzyżanowski helped repel an evening assault by the famed Louisiana Tigers on the Union defenses atop East Cemetery Hill.
1826 Benjamin Henry Grierson (July 8, 1826 â August 31, 1911) was a music teacher, then a career officer in the United States Army. He was a cavalry general in the volunteer Union Army during the Civil War and later led troops in the American Old West.
1838 Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August Graf von Zeppelin (also known as Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, Graf Zeppelin and in English, Count Zeppelin) (8 July 1838 â 8 March 1917) was a German general and later aircraft manufacturer. He founded the Zeppelin Airship company. He was born in Konstanz, Grand Duchy of Baden (now part of Baden-Württemberg, Germany).
