1606 Arthur Chichester, 1st Earl of Donegall (16 June 1606 â 18 March 1675), was an Anglo-Irish peer and soldier. Known as Arthur Chichester until 1757 and as The Earl of Donegall between 1757 and 1791, was an English nobleman and politician in Ireland.
1829 Geronimo (Mescalero-Chiricahua: GoyaaÅé Athabaskan pronunciation: [kòjà ËɬÉÌ] “the one who yawns, June 16, 1829 â February 17, 1909) was a prominent leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Apache tribe. From 1850 to 1886, Geronimo joined with members of three other Chiricahua Apache bandsâthe Tchihende, the Tsokanende and the Nednhiâto carry out numerous raids, as well as fight against Mexican and U.S. military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. Geronimo’s raids and related combat actions were a part of the prolonged period of the ApacheâUnited States conflict, which started with American settlement in Apache lands following the end of the war with Mexico in 1848.
1836 Wesley Merritt (June 16, 1836 â December 3, 1910) was an American major general who served in the cavalry of the United States Army during the American Civil War, American Indian Wars, SpanishâAmerican War, and the PhilippineâAmerican War. Following the latter war, he became the first American Military Governor of the Philippines.

1917 Phaedon Gizikis (16 June 1917 â 26 July 1999) was a Greek army general, and the second and last President of Greece under the Junta, from 1973 to 1974. Born in Volos, Greece, Gizikis was a career Hellenic Army officer. He graduated from the Hellenic Military Academy in 1939, achieving the rank of second lieutenant in artillery, and participated in the Greco-Italian War and the Greek Civil War. In 1967, he supported the Georgios Papadopoulos coup d’état and received a number of senior military posts during the dictatorship that followed.
