MARCH 27
1676 Francis II Rákóczi was a Hungarian nobleman and leader of the Hungarian uprising against the Habsburgs in 1703-11 as the prince of the Estates Confederated for Liberty of the Kingdom of Hungary. He was also Prince of Transylvania, an Imperial Prince, and a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Today he is considered a national hero in Hungary.
1799 Alessandro Ferrero La Marmora (27 March 1799 â 7 June 1855) was an Italian general who is best remembered for founding the military unit known as the Bersaglieri. Two of his brothers were Alfonso Ferrero La Marmora and Alberto Ferrero la Marmora, the naturalist.
1823 Samuel Kosciuszko Zook (born Samuel Kurtz Zook, March 27, 1821 â July 3, 1863) was a Union general during the American Civil War, mortally wounded in action during the Battle of Gettysburg
1844 Adolphus Washington Greely (March 27, 1844 â October 20, 1935) was a United States Army officer, polar explorer, and recipient of the Medal of Honor. He was the son of John Balch Greeley and Frances Dunn Cobb Greeley. He was a third cousin of American author and statesman Horace Greeley.
1894 Colonel René Paul Fonck (27 March 1894 â 18 June 1953) was a French aviator who ended the First World War as the top Entente fighter ace and, when all succeeding aerial conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries are also considered, Fonck still holds the title of “all-time Allied Ace of Aces”. He received confirmation for 75 victories (72 solo and three shared) out of 142 claims. Taking into account his probable claims, Fonck’s final tally could conceivably be nearer 100 or above. He was made an Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1918 and later a Commander of the Legion of Honor after the war, and raised again to the dignity of Grand Officer.
1938 Admiral Sir John Cunningham Kirkwood “Jock” Slater, GCB, LVO, DL (born 27 March 1938) is a retired Royal Navy officer. He commanded a minesweeper, a frigate and then a destroyer before taking over the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and then achieving higher command in the Navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff from 1995 to 1998: in that capacity he played a key role in the 1998 Strategic Defence Review carried out by the Labour Government that had come to power a year earlier.
