1724 Admiral Augustus John Hervey, 3rd Earl of Bristol, PC (19 May 1724 â 23 December 1779 ) was a Royal Navy officer and politician. He commanded the sixth-rate HMS Phoenix at the Battle of Minorca in May 1756 as well as the third-rate HMS Dragon at the Capture of Belle Ãle in June 1761, the Invasion of Martinique in January 1762 and the Battle of Havana in June 1762 during the Seven Years’ War. He went on to be Chief Secretary for Ireland and then First Naval Lord. He was known as the English Casanova, due to his colourful personal life.
1782 Count Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich-Yerevansky, Serene Prince of Warsaw (19 May,1782 â 1 February, 1856) was an Imperial Russian military leader. For his victories, he was made Count of Yerevan in 1828 and Namestnik of the Kingdom of Poland in 1831. He attained the rank of field marshal in the Russian army, and later in the Prussian and Austrian armies.
1812 Felix Kirk Zollicoffer (May 19, 1812 â January 19, 1862) was an American newspaperman, politician, and soldier. A three-term United States Congressman from Tennessee, an officer in the United States Army, and a Confederate brigadier general during the American Civil War; he led the first Confederate invasion of eastern Kentucky and was killed in action at the Battle of Mill Springs. Zollicoffer was the first Confederate general to die in the Western Theater.
1828 Adin Ballou Underwood (May 19, 1828 â January 24, 1888) was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
1891 Oswald Boelcke (19 May, 1891 â 28 OCT. 1916) was a German flying ace of the First World War credited with 40 victories; he was one of the most influential patrol leaders and tacticians of the early years of air combat. Boelcke is honored as the father of the German fighter air force, as well as considered the “Father of Air Fighting Tactics”. Boelcke was picked to lead one of Germany’s first fighter squadrons, Jagdstaffel 2 (Fighter Squadron 2). By the end of the war, this squadron had 25 aces in its ranks, and four of its members became generals during World War II. During the short time before his death, Boelcke became the world’s leading fighter pilot, scoring 21 more victories while commanding Jagdstaffel 2. He was killed in a crash following a midair collision on 28 October 1916.
1897 Frank Luke Jr. (May 19, 1897 â September 29, 1918) was an American fighter ace credited with 19 aerial victories, ranking him second among United States Army Air Service pilots after Captain Eddie Rickenbacker during World War I. Luke was the first airman to receive the Medal of Honor and first USAAS ace in day. Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, a United States Air Force pilot training installation since World War II, is named in his honor.
