Robert Muir was Left Waist Gunner on B-17 #42-29725 “Hi-Lo Jack”, shot down over France on the 3 September 1943 mission to Romilly-Sur-Seine (Paris). Robert managed to evade capture with the help of many French citizens and members of the Résistance, including Belgians of the “Comète” evasion network. Hidden in various places in France, he was guided to the South and crossed the Pyrénées mountains into Spain on 24 October. He ended up in Gibraltar on 10 November and was flown from there on the 19th, arriving back in England on 20 November 1943.
