The 5 Sullivan brothers, George Thomas, 27 * Francis Henry “Frank”, 26 * Joseph Eugene “Joe”, 24 * Madison Abel “Matt”, 23 * Albert Leo “Al”, 20, were serving together aboard the light cruiser USS Juneau in the Pacific when on 14 November 1942 she was struck from a torpedo fired from the Japanese submarine I-26. Eight days later 10 survivors of the crew of 697 men were found. All of the Sullivans perished. Because of this tragedy the Navy enforced a prohibition against siblings serving together. A Fletcher class destroyer, USS The Sullivans (DD-537) was named in their honor.
