THIS MONTH IN AMERICAN MILITARY HISTORY
On May 5, 1864, the “Rochester Regiment” (140th NY) donning their brand new Zouave uniforms, made a courageous charge against Confederate positions around Saunder’s Field during the Battle of the Wilderness. Nearly half of the regiment became casualties.
Also, from May 10-20, 1969, 3 airborne infantry battalions of the 101st Airborne Division, by means of a controversial frontal assault captured Hill 937 during the Vietnam War. The action resulted in so many casualties to both American and North Vietnamese forces that it became known as “Hamburger Hill.”
