World War One was the first time that women were allowed to enlist in the United States armed services. IRMA LEWIS BARON was one of the first women to enlist in the Navy. She helped to enlist over 500 sailors in Rochester and Buffalo. The following is her listing in in the âWorld War Service Record of Rochester and Monroe County, N.Y.â Baron, Irma Lewis, 15 Bartlett St., Rochester, N. Y. Entered the service at Rochester, N. Y., April 24, 1917, at the age of 20 years, in the U. S. Naval Reserve Force. Served at Navy Recruiting Station, Rochester, N. Y., from April 24, 1917 to Sept. 30, 1918; Naval Mobilization, Buffalo, N. Y., to Nov. 11, 1918. Yeoman, 3d Class, 21 days; 2d Class, 231 days; 1st Class F, 243 days; Chief Yeoman F, 71 days. Discharged, Aug. 24, 1919.
