1776 â The Declaration of Independence was signed by president of Congress John Hancock and secretary Charles Thomson. John Hancock said, âThere, I guess King George will be able to read that.â referring to his signature on the Declaration of Independence. Other signers later included Benjamin Rush and Robert Morris. Of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, eight were born outside North America.
